I can understand that, but HD are Not a major factor in balance issues. On the average you're only talking a 1 Hit Point difference per class level between d8(4) and d6(3). If you really want to do it that way you can, I just have never seen a class in any source do it this way is all. The only issue I would have here is the fact that it is Charisma. If you want to use this Mechanic that is fine, but I would personally stick to the existing mechanics and choose the ability to be based on either Wisdom or Intelligence. Not only do these two stats make sense to be able to offer an AC boost, but it entwines a secondary stat focus into the class. Not All of the class’s stat focus should be on Charisma, as it should need to choose between important stats. I will think on the list, but I agree that the spells should be based on Personal effects, as well as a few direct damage spells that make sense to a melee-mage type like touch and rays. This is a really tough thing to get into because it will impact more than just Spellcasting. For example using Spell-Like Abilities bans the character from using Metamagic unless you grant the PC access to the Monster Feats. If you use DC’s you introduce the possibility of spell failure, which you were trying to avoid. If you DO really want it unique I would make it so they are more like the Psychic Warrior, gaining spells per day as Spell-Like Abilities but with a thematic. That or convert them to a Spell-Point system to make them more unique. Either way its going to present a bit of work. Well just to give an example a 20th level Fighter and 20th level Arcane Warrior. (Assume 18 strength for both and 18 Charisma for the AW, and no magic items.) Fighter (+26/+21/+16/+11 Attack Bonus; +8 dam.) BAB: +20 with Weapon Focus/Greater Weapon Focus: +2 with Specialization/Greater Specialization: +4 dam. Strength 18: +4 AW (+29/+24/+19 Base then max with variable class ability = +34/+29/+24; +12 dam.) BAB: +15 with Specialization Style = Weapon Focus/Greater Weapon Focus: +2 with Specialization Style = Specialization/Greater Specialization: +4 dam. Strength 18: +4 (hit and dam) Arcane Strike: +4 Variable - Way of the Warrior (original): 5th spells available = +1 to +5 Charisma 18: +4 (hit and dam) Then compare: Fighter saves: +12/+6/+6 (possibly as high as +16/+10/+10 with a +4 to each from stats or feats) AW saves: of +20/+20/+14 And SR30 (assuming the same +4 bonus for stats and feats + Arcane Resistance) Fighter AC: Plate (+8) + Dex (+1) + Shield (+2) = 21 AW AC: Cha (+4) + Dex (+1) = 15 (with Way of Warrior 20) And DR5/magic And this is all before spells… Hope this helps the perspective a little. As always – take it with a grain of salt. :)
