Just feel like sharing.
Last nite the DM of our group didn't show up. He was already 2 hours late and noone had an idea what was up with him. We decided to play a "one-shot-adventure" and I volunteered to DM. Up until this point, I've only DMed a solo-campaign, so I wanted to get some experience with a "standard" 4 player group.
The only thing was, I had no idea or adventure prepared, I just decided to "wing" it. I picked the Forgotten Realms, basically around the same area as my solo-campaign. I came up 3 different plot hooks that I felt I could flesh out as the game progressed.
The start was a bit slow, with the group wandering around the local inn, not even having met each other. Most of the players were generous enough to "introduce" their characters to one another, except one.
This one kept on my toes! I assumed the players would "do as expected" and introduce each other and head towards the local dungeon, which one of the characters had heard about. I thought they would all meet up and start a mini-dungeon-crawl.
Anyways, since I figured it was a one-shot I let one player play a female elf wizard born and raised in Evermeet. I used the great "teleportation accident" for the elf's appearance in the area of the High Forest. I assumed the elf would latch on to the other player's in hopes of finding a way home.
Instead, the elf wanders off by herself and gets captured by the "sinister" forces of the corrupt town council. The session turned into a "rescue" mission of sorts, as the other players were trying to locate the elf and discover the "dark going-ons" in town, while the elf was merely trying to escape.
I had an interesting time trying to think of things on the spot and figure out ways for the elf to get hooked up with the rest of the party! Anyways, to make a short story even shorter, the party finally meet up in the nearby High Forest after assisting in a "rigged" hunt for some nobles.
They dispatched a group of "weakened" wolves and a very elderly owlbear. As the group was about to question the nobles, who had actually planned on hunting the elf, they were char-broiled by a lightning bolt from a "wizard" from the town. This wizard is actually the one who had the elf captured. At that point, the characters staring at the floating wizard, I ended the session.
Although the first 2 hours or so were rather slow, mainly consisting of role-playing and trying to get the characters together, introduce the adventure, etc., it was hopefully a fun experience for all. It was for me and a good learning experience as well!
It was actually a lot of fun trying to come up with "adventures" and "encounters" on the spot.
