Far too often I see a thread pop up complaining about something wrong with the poster's gaming group, or asking for help dealing with a situation that really isn't within the poster's control (e.g. some guy in the group is just a jerk). I wanted to infuse some positive remarks into the forums so I thought I would explain why my gaming group is awesome. My gaming group is about evenly men and women. We have three men and two women. The women are both wives of other men in the group (one of them is my wife), but I could also say that two of the men are husbands of the other women in the group because the women don't just game because their husbands do it. In fact, one couple met because of gaming. How awesome is that? So my gaming group isn't just some sausage fest with continual pissing contests. We get a really balanced perspective on what both men and women like in our games and that's awesome. In my gaming group, we're friends outside of gaming. We do other things besides just gaming. I hang out every Tuesday with one of my friends and watch anime or movies with him and my wife. I cook for us and we hang out and chat. It's a lot of fun. Sometimes I drive around to all the used bookstores in town (and even stores in other towns) with one of my friends and look for bargains. When I was in the hospital a little over a year ago, they all came to visit me several times, brought me care packages, and helped look after me after I was out. We sometimes argue during our games. We sometimes hurt each others' feelings. What gaming group doesn't? But we always apologize to each other afterward and realize how silly it was to argue. In other words, we value our friendships more than our opinions. We talk about stuff besides gaming. Sometimes we spend more time talking about stuff that isn't gaming than we do gaming. This might be frustrating if I was looking forward to the gaming part, but I realize it is good that we have more in common with each other than just the game. We spend time socializing about more than just the game, and that too is awesome. We give each other back rubs. I dare you to tell me that isn't awesome. We play lots of different games. We have played several editions of D&D, Rifts, Mutants & Masterminds, Vampire, Mage, and a number of different board games. We have a lot of different interests and we take time to explore them all. Having diversity in the group is awesome. We have more than just one GM. Almost all of us have taken the time to GM at one time or another. Sometimes one of us gets tired of GMing. Sometimes one of us is excited to try a new concept. Sometimes we want to play a new game. But whatever the reason, we all take turns being the player or the GM. None of us are perfect. I'm not perfect either. But you can't expect anyone to be perfect. And considering how great our group is despite our imperfection, I'd say that's pretty awesome.
