Yes, this is correct. Also, he can decide to use smite after seeing if it was a critical hit or not. -Does the crit roll all dice twice, not just the mauls? Roll all dice twice, yes, including from Thundering Smite and Divine Smite. -Does Great Weapon Fighter affect the non-maul dice? Going strictly by RAW, I think he can reroll the dices from the maul and the dices from the Thundering Smite, but not from Divine Smite. Thundering Smite says that "the attack deal and extra 2d6 damage" and Great Weapon Fighting says you can reroll "when you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make". As the spell is writen, we can say the damage is part of the attack, just like the weapon's damage. Divine smite says you "deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage"; so it seems the radiant damage is not part of the weapon's attack, it's more like another source of damage, so you can't reroll it. Though, as a DM, I probably wouldn't mind the player rerolling the damage from Divine Smite. -Can you cast a spell and use a spell slot for Divine Smite on the same turn? Yes, Divine Smite doesn't require actions or bonus actions, you just have to hit the target and say it. Also, when he gets the Extra Attack feature on 5th level, he can even smite twice, as long as he hits both attacks. He could smite even more times if he gets more attacks from other features.
