My Next BBEG: Dwarven Mystic Theurge Lich

Eye Tyrant

First Post
I've got a nice little map that I was thinking of planting a Lich in for a game this weekend (or perhaps next week if scheduling doesn't permit). I wanted this Lich to be a former Cleric of Dumathoin that was left to guard a gate to Undermountain (yes, FR). During his tenure has "gate-guard" he discovers magic and persues that to pass the long years of seclusion... Eventually becoming a Mystic Theurge, but with a growing contempt for his duty... Perhaps he was Geased, Bound, or what not to keep him in the location... Finally losing all sense of reality this guy performs the ritual that give him the "gift" of undeath and making him a Lich :] ....

Just an idea right now... any advice out there?

ET,

Do you have 2E's Demihuman Deities? If not, you might be interested in this piece of FR canon from page 62:

A long-sealed temple of Dumathoin, the Vault of Hidden Silences, still exists on the Lost Level in the depths of Undermountain beneath the city of Waterdeep. A single priest, Bandaerl Dumatheir, son of Rykos, blood of Melair, High Old One of Dumathoin, and protector of Melairbode’s essence (an archlich specialty priest), guards the temple and adjoining crypts of Clan Melairkyn from unwanted interlopers and Halaster’s mischief. Further details of this temple may be found in Undermountain: The Lost Level.

I think the UM: The Lost Level module is available for free download.

Anyway, perhaps your BBEG grew too obsessed with the crypts in his care and started down the path of necromancy. While he still treats the dwarven crypts with reverence, perhaps he now experiments on non-dwarves? A role-playing angle that might be possible to exploit here is that using animate dead or similar on the dwarven corpses in his care might show him the error of his ways if also accompanied by suitable dialogue.

I have Dungeaon Crawl: The Lost Level (as well as the other mods in that series). That's where I got the idea for this guy... Might be a little redundant since Bandaerl is a Lich as well (though IIRC he is good). I am dropping my homebrew town into the FR and was going to have this new BBEG guarding a gate to UM/Lost Level...
