Back in 1E having henchmen and getting followers at higher levels were an important part of the game. Thus, any excess magical loot could be passed on to your followers which increased thier morale and made them more useful to your character.  Getting rid of henchmen and followers while still handing out oodles of magical goodies meant that the marketplace became the only sensible solution.  I would love for rarer magical items and followers to give them to return to the game.</blockquote>
