I tend to agree with The Forsaken One a well planned attack and surprise can really hit the enemies hard. I'm part of a group which consists of a 15th level Mage/Fire Elementalist, a 16th level Mage/Fighter/Blade Singer, a 16th level Mage and myself 16th level Rogue/Vigilante. We encountered a den of 20 were rats each 12th level (9 Fighter & 3 for template) 3 were rat ogres 16th level each and a were rat sorcerer 18th level. We had surprise so 1 wizard blocked all entrances out and upto us with a wall of force, the elemantalist cast an attacking spell (Cant remember name of spell) which caused high damage to the sorcerer, I shot 3 times and luckily critically hit twice (No sneak) and hit with the 3rd and the blade singer cast a fireball to damage the sorcerer and the rat ogres. Init was rolled and the party ended winning that and continued by slaying the sorcerer, 2 rat ogres and 12 of the were rats. The last rat ogre was shot down by me after it attempted to climb up the wall and the rest of the were rats were taken out by area effect spells. This combat went really well due to good planning before going in and a lot of lucky rolls but had we lost surprise and/or init it could had been messy.
