As I wrote above, if you compare it to the 1/3 casters of other martial classes (Arcane Trickster, Eldritch Knight) it becomes clear very quickly. I already explained it, but I will go into more detail by comparing the class to an Eldritch Knight. We will use 7th level as a point of comparison, since it gets worse at high levels, but everyone complains that no one plays high levels. Eldritch Knight: Gets two cantrips, knows 5 spells (can choose from the Wizard list of abjuration and evocation!), and casts 6 spells per day (4x1, 2x2). Plus, they get the whole fight/cast synergy (War Bond) that allows them to cast a cantrip and attack with their weapon. 4E: You get two elemental disciplines. You can use up to 3 ki points on a spell. At seventh level, you have 7 ki points. Assume you have a good DM, so you have 21 ki points per day. You don't have cantrips. So we know the following: 1. The EK is more flexible than the 4E. Far more flexible. All the elemental disciplines are combat-focuses, while the EK is somewhat limited (abjuration and evocation) those spell choices are a LOT more flexible than the 4e. In addition, the EK has 7 choice points by now (two cantrips, five spells) while the 4E has ... two. 2. Take thunderwave, please! Ha! Seriously, though. Let's use Fist of Four Thunders as an example. It costs 2 ki to "cast"- showing you the rough equivalency of 2ki = 1 level. So you are getting approximately 10 levels of spells; this seems great compared to the 8 spells plus 2 cantrips. But (and it's a massive but) ... this is using your sole resource. This is an entirely bonus resource for the EK. On the other hand, you have to forsake flurry of blows, patient defense, step of the wind, throwing back missiles ... and stunning strike. The EK still is an effective fighter when he uses up his spells. The 4E is an underpowered (severely) monk, because he can't even choose to use his other powers. 3. The EK gets cantrips, the 4E doesn't. I've seen this over and over again in play. I personally think that ki is abundant enough as a resource for all the monk builds - except this one. It just doesn't work. It needs a houserule to make it function effectively. There are some good ones (such as reducing the ki cost of casting spells by 2, minimum 1). But you have to adjust it. But don't take my word for it; play it and tell me what you think. Maybe it will be fun for you. :)
