I have a completely different take on Elan in my world. They are basically psionic cyborgs (without any artificial components), artificially created psionic beings. Thus, any race that can be psionic can be made into Elans, BUT any race that is already NATURALY psionic cannot be. Since my world is much like Dark Sun in that all races are more powerful then those found in most worlds (i.e. equivalent to +1 bonus), I have added to the Elans racial abilities. Elans are not born, they are made through a ritual that pumps more and more psionic points into a being until he either dies or transforms into a truely psionic being, an Elan. Naturally, the process is more complex then this, but that is the basics. Only those who have not become psionically awakened (i.e. have any psionic powers or feats or levels in any psionic classes) can undergo this ritual. The survivors of this process have their lifespans greatly improved (use new lifespan numbers in XPH or double the normal racial lifespan, which ever is greater) and now have access to all of the Elan racial abilities, while also keeping their former racial abilities. BUT, Elans are also Aberrations, thus are now sterrile. Thus, many societies do not allow an individual to attempt to become an Elan until after they have had kids (which are usually raised in creches), which usually means they are in their late twenties to early thirties. To show this life experience, I give all Elans a bonus feat and extra skill points, exactly as if they were human. This bonus feat MUST be a +2/+2 skill feat (i.e. Athletic, Acrobatic, etc), Versatile Feat (from Rokugan: take any 2 skills and consider them class skills), Training Feat (homebrew that was developed on Enworld thread: take 3 interconnected skills and consider class skills), or Skill Focus Feat. The usual +4 skill points at first level and +1/level after that. Characters with racial hit dice levels do not get the +4 skill points, as they do not get first level multipliers for anything but "racial skills", and don't get the +1 skill point per level until after they have undergone the Elan process. skippy GM of the Cursed Earth
