September 8, 2004 (Columbus, OH) – Myrik Games is proud to announce the release of their debut game accessory, Tauralathan’s Grimoire, v.1, which is compatible for use with the Dungeons and Dragons game.

I've been seeing stuff like this a lot lately. It seems that only big companies (or ones with a lot of attention) get slapped for using the Dungeons & Dragons trademark in advertising.

Opinions?

I guess they can't spend all day stomping out little fires. They just aim at the big ones.

I say if WotC doesn't care, I certainly don't.

Awww, I was hoping for more elf porn. :-p

This is just someone (basically a small e-publisher) who doesn't know any better.

Sooner or later, WotC is going to perk up its lawyers and send out "the letters". Happens every time. WotC is quiet for awhile, people think they can get away with a little bit more, and then WotC "cracks down" again. It's business.

The best one can do is to take care of one's own back yard, rather than being bugged how the neighbors are not keeping theirs looking the slightest bit decent, to use an analogy. Eventually, that neighbor's unkempt yard will come back to haunt them, but it won't reflect on your yard unless you decide to give up taking care of yours because "well, they don't do anything with theirs, so..."

Assuming that makes sense and doesn't ramble too much.

I use to send a friendly email saying "You really should read the d20 licenses more closely since sentense so-and-so in your press release violates it." Now I don't find it worth the headache. People don't like being told they've made a mistake.

Why did you start a new thread rather than just reply to the press release?

Because the press release was posted to the news forum, not to a forum where we can post replies.

Not only that, they're using "Dungeon Master" which is claimed as PI by WotC (and a trademark).

I'd like to see someone from that company step in here and explain to us how they feel it's legal for them to use these trademarked terms. Especially when the use of Dungeons & Dragons and Dungeon Master is specifically forbidden.
