Maybe it's the result of reverence, or of D&D failing to model heroic/mythic/genre archetypes, or of the game being designed mainly for group play?  But, the lack of dump stat does make sense, knights & nobility in general were often perceived - or, at least, tried to portray themselves - as, paragons who were accomplished at everything.  It's just never worked well in D&D to have a bunch of 13s, say, rather than an 18 in the class prime requisite and hang the rest....</blockquote>
