Early on there was attempts at self punishment that resulted in miraculously not being punished, and the big one for instance he beat Gwaine proving by right of arms, that his heart remained pure. Gawaine was one of the few knights who may have been a close match for Lancelot and well should have beat him were he disempowered.  It is likely that an earlier version was written where there was no redemption (oath bound heroes is older stories) but once the story became dominated by Christianity the idea of forgiveness and redemption was more important than that of conflicting oaths resulting in a fall which goes at least back to the ancient Cu Chulainn whose two oaths of hospitality and a totemic one where at odds and in that one the hero lost his life. The simpler vision of lancelot's story he did not find a full redemption until he became a monk but there were indications he had indeed been forgiven in the fundamental ways and that he remained the greatest knight,</p></blockquote><p></p>
