A red-haired woman with glasses and a messenger bag gets out and makes for the entrance, greeting the kid with a wave on her way, before unlocking the store and heading inside. She closes the door behind her and the kid keeps waiting. A few more minutes pass and she appears in the doorway to turn over the CLOSED sign and welcome the kid in. He leaves his bike leaning against the outside of the building.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"><strong><u>Law and Harper</u></strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">Harper is at a bench on a walkway in the familiar shopping center. He plays for the occasional passerby, crow watching from a nearby lamp post. It's nice out. Winters in Arizona are mild and today it's about 60°F, enough to justify a coat or jacket, but not uncomfortable. His morning's off to a good start - he's only been at it for two and a half hours or so and he's already made about $5 in change.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">It's around 10:00 AM when three police cruisers pull into the parking lot and come to a stop nearby, outside the Gold Dragon. <em>Crap.</em> The cops like to give him a hard time. <em>Be cool.</em> One by one the cops get out of their cruisers. The first is a thickly-built officer with the worst cop mustache Harper's ever seen. Harper knows this one - not his name, but this one has chased him away from one prime spot or another at least five times in the last few months. The next one is none other than Law. Law and Harper make brief eye contact but don't say anything to one another. Out here in the real world they're not Law and Harper, they're... whatever their real names are. The last officer is an Hispanic woman, slightly overweight and much shorter than her two companions. The trio passes Harper without incident and heads into the Gold Dragon. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">Harper and Crow exchange a look.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"><strong><u>Law</u></strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">Twenty minutes later and Senior Officer Dominic Hawthorne, Senior Officer Jason Bailey, and Officer Yolanda Estrada are finishing up their meal. The three are beat partners today and as usual they're having an early meal at the Gold Dragon buffet, at Jason's insistence. Though Dom and Jason are of the same rank, Jason has been with the NPD considerably longer and out of respect for his seniority the others typically yield to his preferences. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'"></span></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">Jason looks across the table at Dominic and Yolanda while wiping his hands with a napkin. "I've told that bum a hundred times," he's referring to Harper, "I don't want to see him around here." Of all the officers a civilian would want to annoy, Jason is close to last on the list. He has a reputation among the department for getting rough with suspects. <em>Stick time</em>, Dom's heard him refer to it as on a few occasions. Still, Jason is known as a great cop within the department and a shoe-in for sergeant further down the line. "Might need some flashlight therapy to get the point across." Dom considers Jason for a moment and determines that he's probably not serious, just blowing off steam, but the situation still has edge to it.</span></p></blockquote><p></p>
