Need a prestige class

I have a player who is playing a dwarven 2nd Fighter/3rd Sorcerer (earth themed magic) and he asked me "What prestige class do you think I should do? Is there anything with a crafting/alchemical theme?"

I couldn't think of anything. His character is a pretty good alchemist and stonecarver. He is odd for a dwarf. He wears leather scale armor, carries a light shield, dwarven waraxe and has a "firebrand" (aka wheelock pistol) hidden on a sheath on his shield. He when not adventuring is a traveling alchemist and sells small stone carvings as souvenirs.

The player has opted to use the dwarven substitution levels for Sorcerer. I couldn't think of anything at first except to somehow take the Artificer class and redo it as a prestige class.

Does anyone know of either an official or home brew Artificer as a prestige class?

Does anyone know of a prestige class that complements this character?

There is the Runesmith PrC in Races of Stone on pg 119, 120.

Requirements:
Race: Dwarf
Skills: Concentration 5 ranks, Craft (stoneworking) 8 ranks
Feats: Armor Proficiency (heavy), Scribe Scroll
Spells: Able to cast 1st level arcane spells.

Hope this helps.

Runesmith is a good dwarven Sorcerer PrC, especially he is less of a battle sorcerer. I wouldn't reccommend Battlesmith unless he's willing to take a big hit to his caster level. He'd be better off with cleric levels in that case.

If you let him rebuild the character using Incarnum, Ironsoul Forgemaster is a good dwarven crafting PrC. I'd probably go Incarnate 3/Sorcerer 3/Ironsoul Forgemaster 10/Soulcaster 4.

Probably not the best combination. But that'll get you 7 effective levels of Sorcerer, 16 effective levels of Incarnate able to bind to crown, arms, waist, shoulders, and heart. And you can invest essentia in your spells. AND you craft as a 37th level Sorcerer with a +10 to Craft (Weaponsmith/Armorsmith) and get Craft Magic Arms and Armor. His BAB will be shot though. His HP won't be frontline fighter either (3d6+7d4+10d8). But he's more interested with crafting right?

OR you could switch out those three Sorcerer levels for Psion and let the Soulcaster become the Soulmanifester and the Ironsoul Forgemaster gets craft Psionic Arms and Armor. That way he can wear armor and make use of the shield and armor bond class features too. I'm actually surprised that there isn't a psionic/incarnum class in Magic of Incarnum.

Anyways, my two cents. Artificer is probably more what he wants. Magic of Faerun has that as a PrC.

Runesmith isn't a bad idea. Any "alchemist" type prestige classes out there? What about the Artificer as a prestige class? Anyone see one.

Magic of Faerun (3.0) has the 10-level gnome artificer (which is more like a DL tinker gnome's invention use than the Eberron artificer base class; it doesn't advance spellcasting), & 10-level master alchemist (which can learn to brew potions up to 9th level).

Magic of Eberron has the 5-level alchemist savant (can mix alchemical items & create "universal" potions of infusions or spells), & 10-level renegade mastermaker (caster or infuser which 'borg's himself with warforged components).

Complete Arcane has the 5-level effigy master (can make effigies, a sort of sub-type of constructs that resemble normal creatures).

Runesmith is kind of tricky for a sorcerer since he'll need Scribe Scroll and Arcane Preparation (CArc). (The Rune Magic abilitity depends on "preparing" spells.)

One PrC not mention yet is the Earth Dreamer from Races of Stone. Quite fitting for a dwarven earth-themed sorcerer.

I have a homebrewed artificer prestige class. Here ya go...

ARTIFICER

The artificer is a creator. He lets his creativity flow into his work, making items of surpassing quality. Some measure of the artificer’s power flows from his devotion to Tade, the Maker.

Hit Die:
d4.

Prerequisites: Craft (any two) (10 ranks each). Skill Focus (craft). Any three item creation feats. In addition, the character must have created at least one masterwork item for each craft skill and one magic item for each item creation feat she possesses and must worship Tade.

Class Skills: Alchemy (int), Appraise (int), Craft (int), Open Locks (dex), Profession (wis), Scry (int), Use Magic Device (cha). Skill points per level: 4+int bonus.

Base Attack: Poor (as wizard)
Good Saves: Fort and Will.
Poor Saves: Reflex

Level--Special Abilities
1--- Creative Force (10%), Craft Bonus
2--- Bonus Feat, +1 caster level
3--- Creative Force (15%), +1 caster level
4--- +1 caster level
5--- Creative Force (20%), +1 caster level
6--- Bonus Feat, +1 caster level
7--- Creative Force (25%)
8--- +1 caster level
9--- Creative Force (30%), +1 caster level
10-- Bonus Feat, +1 caster level

CLASS FEATURES
Weapon & Armor Proficiency:
Artificers gain no weapon or armor proficiency but are proficient in any armor or weapons they craft themselves.

Spells: At every level except 1st and 7th the artificer’s spellcasting ability in one class increases by one level. Naturally this doesn’t affect any other class abilities.

Craft Bonus: The artificer gets a competence bonus to all Craft checks equal to his class level.

Creative Force: The artificer can craft items more easily than most, and his xp expenditure is reduced by the noted amount. This ability has no effect on the monetary cost or creation time.

Bonus Feats: At 2nd level and every four following levels the artificer gains a bonus item creation feat.

If you're interested, there's a huge Word file of a ton of my homebrewed prcs (as well as a spell doc, a feat doc, etc) in the files section of my campaign's Yahoo group here. Feel free to use them as you'd like.
