Need a spooky companion!

Corsair

First Post
Ok here is the background: My new character is an Occult Slayer, trained in a land which has an are called the Barrens, similar to the Eberron Mournlands (but no mists). I plan on him having a pet/companion who has been tainted by the evil lands where he has lived prior to his adventuring career.

My character is a 12 level rogue/fighter/occultslayer. Originally I was going to use a Pseudodragon Warlock 8 (using Dragon Cohort) but our game we limit PCs and cohorts to only a +2 LA. So what other options would work well for this? I want an intelligent pet who has abnormal "otherworldly" powers caused by the tainted land they lived near.

Some other options:

Awakened Dog Warlock 6
Advanced Blink Dog (would be a normal dog who is slowly growing and developed strange powers)
Awakened Shadow Creature Dog/Wolf Warlock 4.

Can anyone think of any other classes that would represent the wierd powers any better? I could use psionics, but I'm not too keen on the idea.

Not sure exactly what you mean by powers ... however if you want something spooky that has been affected by the Barrens area, you can look at the Corruption/Taint rules in Heroes of Horror.

So the companion will be corrupted/tainted and perhap use some of the special feats/rules in that book.

Why warlock? Warlocks aren't particularly spooky mechanically; they are more "zap zap zap zap zap zap zap."

How about a creepy looking homunculus?

I don't know about you, but a dog that shatters things when he barks would be pretty wierd to me, wouldn't it?

The point is to have an otherwise normal pet who has developed more than animal intelligence, as well as some strange powers which a dog should obviously not have. Since he's intelligent, this would allow him to advance by class to keep up with the main character as he levels. So what classes would fit that? Also the pet needs to be relatively normal looking (enough that he can be taken into towns without too much trouble).

(Bonus points if the ladies think the pet is cute)
