Need advice - good CRPG to waste the weekend

I found Morrowind amazingly boring. If you've played Daggerfall, like I did, and eventually burned yourself out on it, like I did, Morrowind is more of a chore than a game. I played it for a grand total of about 3 hours before I shelved it, never to be touched again. On the other hand, if you loved the endless FedEx missions in Daggerfall, you'll love this game.

Thanks to all who've posted advice. I bit the bullet yesterday, and bought Beyond Divinity. SO far, I'm enjoying it a LOT, because it's very different from a lot of the class/levels CRPG's (there's level, but not classes, and an interesting skill system). I stayed up till 3 a.m. playing it, and plan to stay up today until my bleary little eyes cross and I fall down.

It's not every game where a good guy gets paired up with a DEATH KNIGHT, like in a Hope and Crosby "Road" Movie. :)

So Divine Divinity is good? I keep seeing it and it is one of those games where I'm like, I want to buy it, but I'm not sure if it'd be fun for very long.

The game I purchased is Beyond Divinity; Divine Divinity was the first game, released in 2002.

WARNING: I've been playing this thing for about 6 hours now, and have now run into MULTIPLE hard crashes. I've even had my Windows XP reboot while playing this thing!!!! The game will frequently just crash back out to the Win XP desktop, but occasionally it will soft-reboot me. I've NEVER had that happen before, and it's strictly only when I'm playing the game.

I've got the absolute latest Patch for the game, as well as the latest video and Direct X software, so it seems to be SERIOUS game problems. I'm still playing it, but I may wind up tomorrow taking it back for a refund.

I just thought I should let everyone know.

You didn't get the first game with the second? The copies I've sen in EB have a sticker saying the first game was included.

Hope the crash problem gets sorted out some time, tell the developer what you can so they can look into it, too.

While it's a little late now that you made your choice, but I still recommend getting Beyond Good & Evil, it's not an RPG, but is really good (rather similar to the 3D Zelda gmaes). It's cheap to boot.

I'm not entirely sure how this thread has gone this long without someone mentioning Planescape: Torment. It's getting a little dated by now, but it's still an AMAZING game. You can probably find it for $10 in the old rack at Best Buy, too. If you've got any affection for Planescape, you'll love this game. I still rate it as the best CRPG out there.

Yeah, my mistake. I meant Beyond Divinity but typed Divine Divinity. Sucks about the crashing though, hopefully that will get sorted out.

Already played. If it had D&D on the box, I've played it. :) (Except for Ruins of Myth Drannor, which I stayed away from due to the scare stories about how buggy and problematic it was.) Thanks for the recommend, though!

Thankfully I hadn't heard about any of that stuff when I picked up RoMD for $5 at the grocery store. I gotta say that was the best $5 I ever spent on my computer. I played RoMD almost every day for at least a couple of hours, and it still took me nearly three months to finish that game. I don't think even my 2E Player's Handbook was that much of a value. I really enjoyed the game too, although the implementation of the 3E rules was lacking in places (you don't get to pick your own skills or feats). In fact I hadn't played pen and paper D&D in a while and got inspired to go find myself a gaming group after playing RoMD.

As for the technical problems, despite running it on XP (which isn't supported) the only problem I had was with sound playback, and that was mostly solved by turning the hardware accelleration on my sound card all the way down. Of course I also downloaded and installed all of the patches before I began playing.

Definitely worth checking out if you can find it somewhere cheap.

a little late, it being Sunday morning, but you might want to look into Sacred. Fairly typical CRPG, best way to describe it is a cross between Diablo and BG. I'm enjoying it, though it's not the best game. A lot of riding from place to place to place, and the AI isn't the greatest, especially for the dragons. Play a character with a good ranged attack and you can sit back and pick the dragons off while they try to hit you with a breath weapon from out of range. :S

But I'm enjoying it, so *shrugs*
