I just felt that the idea of a paladin, the ultimate in holy warrior, fits nicely with the war-like nature of the Drowned God. In addition, Rangers would work as well (since they have a divine nature focus, and the ocean is indeed a part of nature). However the "3rd level divine spells" is a tough requirement for a Paladin or Ranger (11th level I think). Perhaps I could change it to "Must be able to cast Resist Elements (Fire) as a Divine Spell". That way, the skill ranks requirement becomes the major level requirement, and a Ranger can qualify at the same time as a Cleric (while a Paladin would be delayed until 8th level). I could even increase the Swim requirement to 9 or 10 ranks (6 or 7th level), to make up for the spell-like abilities and spells being too powerful at lower levels.
Thanks for your response. To address the spells issue, I could do one of the following: a) reduce the "+1 existing class" spells to be less frequent than every level (like every other level, or skipping every third level); b) I could reduce the number of times a spell-like ability can be used from "equal to charisma modifier" to "once a day". As for core paladins being Lawful Good, you're right of course. I could change the Alignment to be "any" (and I don't think this would harm things much, since the Drowned God discriminates only on ones willingness to fight and die for the cause, not on good or evil, law or chaos).
