Hmm... some ideas.... - portals to 'fey' worlds with the magic seeping through and corrupting / mutating living beings (including plants!!). Look to Raven Crowking's thread for further ideas. - a meteor crashed here a long time ago. The metal or crystals of the meteor emenate some corrupting chaos like energy mutating plants and animals. The 'master' of the meteor gets strange powers, but the link keeps him/her within one mile of the meteor. He/she needs minions to do stuff. The corrupting process takes time the farther away you are. The survivors are already showing some signs of the corruption. The Master is waiting for the process to progress so he/she can enslave the humans as well. Maybe the first humans have already progressed far enough to be mentally influenced by the master. - the centre of the island holds an entrance to the underdark, to an exile enclave where exiled aboleth, mindflayers, beholders etc. have an uneasy truce. They fear that the coming of the humans may upset the balance. None of them dared yet take the first step to contact / enslave them, but this time is now drawing near. Each side is approached by another faction, adding a whole new level of intrigue and power to the conflict. - the centre of the island holds a crashed spelljammer. A few surviving Neogi and their umberhulk servants are holed up there attempting repairs. The humans are too numerous to enslave / overcome, so the Neogi have been using magic to transform and grow mutant animals as servants. Once they have confidence they are powerful enough, they will attack the human encampments with the intent of enslaving them all. Maybe they have already done this to one encampment. Now the fued between the two human sides seems trivial. The PC's may need to rescue the captured enemy humans since the combined might is needed to defeat the Neogi and their spawn...
