Need help wih ideas and beginning of campaign

This scenario I have put on other boards and didn't get much of a response. Cold I get some critiques and such, and maybesome help fleshing out the restof the plot.


Story begins at The Far Guardian’s Traveler’s Mission in the town of Raven’s Bluff. The six PCs are the only ones staying there. Early in the morning they hear a commotion out in the main area of the (listen check) As the PCs walk out into the main area they two men arguing. One is a man in red robes and the other looks as if he is a noble of some sort. You see the mission director (Jarlin) walk up and ask the two men to leave. The noble man looks upset and tells the director that this is none of his business. They seem to be arguing over the crystal ring in which the noble man wears. The man in red robes reaches and grabs the nobleman’s hands and tries to take the ring by force. Jarlin steps back in to stop the fighting, but just as he does the nobleman pulls his dagger and accidentally stabs the director. In that instance the ring slips off of the nobleman’s finger and falls to the floor shattering into pieces. When the crystal ring shatters a surge of bright light flashes up and then a wave of energy sweeps across the room. (fortitude save to not be knocked out.)

When the group awakes they find themselves on the banks of what looks to be a river. As you look around you not only see the men that were also staying at the mission, but you also see furniture and chests and all sorts of stuff that was in the mission. Out near the edge of the water is Jarlin the mission director. Search check will find a small violet gem (enchanted).

To the north and west across the river are mountains, to the east and to the south is clear lands.

( violet gem that is found is a mutation gem. The gem will pick out a subject and try to force itself upon the person. )

If you want more responses probably you should give a bit more information.
Anyway:
1) How does the ring work ? Triggered teleport or a planeshift ?
2) Do the players have to find a way to get back home ? And how ?
3) What precisely does the violet gem ?
4) What's the level of power of the PC ?

I'll suggest they have been brought to another material plane, and they have to come back through some sort of planar gate: they need then to
- realize where they are
- find a gate
- find the knowledge of when and how the gate can be opened
- find the power necessary to open the gate
- perform other quests in this alternative world: for example in exchange for information or help.

You could have that mutation gems are common in this plane, and have different powers.

Anyway these are only suggestions (I just got the MotP and are often thinking of prepearing a planar campaign)
 

I think that we do need more information to get the ideas flowing. First, you mention that when the group awakes they see..... What if the group makes their saving throws and are not knocked unconcious? Are the man in the red robes and the noble unconcious or awake? What will they do when the group tries to intervene to find out what happened?

Is the group really on a different plane, or or they just somewhere else in the same world? What types of monsters or creatures are in the area they are teleported to? Would any of these creatures be attracted by a big magical burst of energy?

There are a lot of questions to ask about the world to get an idea of what might happen to the group. This scenario sounds like a good starting point for an adventure, but what other ideas and background information do you have for the campaign?

More info: The Crystal ring is powerful and when it is shattered it causes a wild magic surge of sorts that causes the group to be teleported to another place in this world. They are not on another plane.

The saving throws are more of something to make the feel that they have a say in what happens to them.
The other two men are not effcted by the surge.

The types of monsters and creatues are yet to be determined. Andmost o the creaures would probably be affraid of a surge of energy like this.

The players will have to find a way to get back home, and the how is up to them.

The PCs are starting out at level 1.
They are:
Dwarven Male Paladin of Moradin.
Human Male Fighter.
Human Female Fighter (archer).
Human Male Wizard.
Gnome Male Rogue.

And that is really all have.
