Ultimate mastermind, even made a movie on it: Mansquito. :] What about a race descended from some guy that was bitten by a magically enchanted spider and gained its proportionate speed and strength along with a danger sense and webspinning abilities? Naturally they'd attempt to use their powers for entertainment purposes at first but eventually work for the common good. Too comic book-y? Hrm. How about an intelligent ooze that seeks to bond with a host, granting all sorts of abilities like strength, endurance, chameleon skin, etc but is afraid of fire or even loud noises? Ooo. Make 'em the nemesis (nemesi?) of the first species. And from Outer Space! Nah, probably been done to death. Um... a dude that's trapped in a suit of armor that has him look like a scorpion, again with the proportionate strength and abilities? Heck, let 'em zap stuff or spit acid with his tail. Naturally he hates just about everything because he'll never be normal again. There's always the guy with extra limbs growing out of his abdomen after a failed experiment blows up in his face. Hmm. Name him... Sorceror Squid? Bleh. Dr Strange? Nah, been taken. Seriously tho, how about a race that's a group mind that becomes more intelligent and thus more dangerous the more of them there are, kinda like those brain cell critters from the original series of Star Trek? The rub is they're not much more than your average bugs. Have some fun with 'em by making them able to function as a unit (humanoid) yet criticals do nothing and most spells are useless, other than the typical area affect stuff.
