First Post
So I just started reading up on d&d and I'm excited about starting a campaign soon for the very first time. That being said I think I have decided on playing a storm soul/fire soul tempest genasi ensnarment swordmage. From an rpg standpoint I can't wait to come up with a back story for him, but I am at a loss as far as powers and stats go. I don't even know where to begin, please help! Thank you!

Grydan's suggestion is good for mechanics. For background, what campaign setting are you playing in?

Well, you obviously want to load up on feats that are linked to your elemental manifestations, and that guide will help you quite a bit with that.

For backgrounds, though, only you can provide answers to questions like these:

He's an arcane martial artist by class- what does that make you think of? Is he a student of those arts or did it come to him naturally?

He's an adventurer- is he running from something or chasing something?

What has his genasi nature done to his social life? Was he an outcast or was he at home in the land of his birth?

Is he a white hat, a black hat or somewhere in-between?

Do you have access to the character builder program? If not, what books do you have access to?

Genasi have +2 to INT and the other +2 can be CON or STR - ensnaring swordmages will usually want CON. You will want INT and CON highest. After that, choose your remaining stats based on what is most important to you:
*will defense not totally hosed - add either WIS (insight skill) or CHA (intimidate/ diplomacy); put an 8 in the one you don't choose.
*not going last - add DEX
*athletics skill and an acceptable Melee Basic Attack, and maybe some Assault Swordmage powers - add STR

For powers, try to give yourself powers that benefit from your high CON, and powers that have a bonus for Ensnarers. Consider either Lightning Lure or Sword burst for one of your at-wills, and choose a melee weapon power for the other one; this gives you variety and flexibility.

With the thousands of feats available, choosing your one feat at first level can be agonizing. Your character concept of fire/storm requires the Extra Manifestation feat, but you may decide you need some other basics first. Intelligent Blademaster is important for your opportunity attacks, for instance, and removes most of the reasons for putting any points into STR. Or you might want Grasping Ensnarement or Heavy Blade Expertise.

Buy a 1-handed blade to get the full use of your defensive aegis feature, and of course some leather armor.

I recommend that if you are all new to the game, you give yourselves permission to do a few rebuilds and changes to your characters between now and level 2. That way you'll be more free to experiment, and if a feat or power doesn't work the way you hoped it would you can try something else.

Welcome to D&D!

I hesitate to say this, but look at some other swordmage builds to see if there is some build other than ensnaring you might like to play, particularly if this is your first time. It's kind of a frustrating defender for the rest of the party, as other than providing a -2 to hit against your allies, you're not doing much of anything to protect them. Also you end up teleporting a critter away from your allies, when they really just wanted to beat him up, so it sometimes ends up being counterproductive all around.

If you play a different build like shielding swordmage, your defender effect will be much more evident and appreciated by your playmates.

I hate telling people "don't play that", because I'm a proponent of "play what you want," but in this case... Play something slightly different that you want to play.

Other than that, Genasi Swordmage is perfectly fine. Sword Burst is the staple for most swordmages. If you play a Stormsoul, pick a thunder/lightning power or two to use with Promise of Storm, like Booming Blade, and maybe Lightning Clash as an encounter. For feats, Intelligent Blademaster is a good start. For stats, you have some options, be sure post racial, you have at least an 18 intelligence and 16 constitution (18/18, or 20/16 are also perfectly fine).

Edit: I'll echo that some allowance to tweak the character as you play is a good idea, particularly since this is your first character. I've played with a lot of beginner players, and there are always rules that are misunderstood at first, or don't work quite the way they thought, or powers/feats that are just complete duds.

All of that sounds great, but does anyone know where I can read up on the shielding swordmage aegis? And also a place that helps differentiates the difference between the genasi sub races as far as powers and feasts and spells go?

I've never made a Swordmage myself, but the Character Optimization board over on WotC's D&D forum has a handbook full of helpful suggestions.

Be careful of using the builds in those threads. They're generally optimised for a very specific set of circumstances and play-styles that are not always compatible with reality. In addition, they often make sacrifices at lower levels in order to achieve silly combinations at higher levels, or one specific and very cheesy schtick that may or may not be applicable to your game.

In other words, there's some good, solid advice in those threads, but they are absolutely NOT a bible to live by. Consider them suggestions, not absolutes.

1. Compendium, if you have a DDI subscription. this will be the most current version, incorporating any errata.
2. Forgotten Realms Players' Guide, if you don't, for both swordmages and genasi. More genasi manifestations in Dragon #380 (which also requires a DDI subscription).
