Need idea to introduce a Mage to a Cleric of Tyr

Just started my group a few months back and things have been going good, but the lack of a full blown mage/item creation source(even for wands/potions) has been kind of a hindrance. So I suggested one of the people to take Leadership at 6th level since he has a good Charisma score. So now, I need a reason for this Mage to join up with our group. Right now they are going to start The Speaker in Dreams, I thought maybe one of the "Sorcerers" realized what they are and had inflitrated it (Maybe s/he is a Harper) and got captured and maybe will be tortured and executed and the PCs capture him. Some other plausible ways of meeting and maybe a quick background, doesn't need to be elaborate would help out tremendously.

Go for something simpler. "Harry" is a wizard who been stuck in his lab, crafting items for adventurers for a few years now. Its a goodliving, but lately he's been wondering what it would be like to be a hero himself. So, "Harry" sells his shop, buys a horse and starts hanging around the right kind of bars and taverns looking for an adventurung party to join. Spoting your adventuring group, he approaches and offers his services.

Maybe the villians of Speaker in Dreams have captured this character to try to force him to make magic items for them. The PC's rescue him and he joins them in gratitude.
