I think you should go for it with Bashing, i'm a big fan of that. A masterwork waraxe is also a good idea, but paying for a second +1 weapon with your current wealth isn't a good idea, so just masterwork, switch to the other axe when confronted with DR/magic. If you have the money for it, get mithral breastplate as well, it's an investment in the future, since eventually you'll want to switch to it anyway. If you can't afford it, I wouldn't upgrade the current armor; again, you'll probably be scrapping it in a level or 3 for mithral breastplate anyway. I'm a big fan of AC whoring myself, it just so happens that Bashing is awesome and since getting mithral bp would banrupt you yet increasing your current armor is wasteful, it just so happens I'm recommending offense. I do think ring of protect +1, or if you have it, natural armor +1 is worth it for 2000 gp, though. Or maybe getting +1 on your armor is ok, if you don't mind throwing 500 gp (costs 1k to upgrade, and later on will sell for 50%) in the garbage. You put bashing on AND get shield spikes. So a Bashing spiked heavy shield is dealing base damage of 2d6, instead of the d6 a regular spiked heavy shield is inflicting. When enlarged, the damage becomes 3d6 (instead of d8 if it were just spiked), becoming an even better value. Bashing also includes a free +1 weapon enhancement as well, it's really quite the steal, almost singelhandedly makes shields into respectable melee weapons.
