All wotc books are fair game? My my. "Races of Eberron" has the Warforged Race, which mixes well with Adamantine Body feat and the Psion class from the "Expanded Psionics Handbook". I haven't tried it, but I have heard that a human with vow of poverty (from book of exalted deeds) that then takes a class from "Magic of Incarnum" can do fairly well, since you get some bennies for giving up magic items on the one hand and also get powers that take up the now-unused magic item slots on the other. Not sure if 6th level is the best to try that out though. 6th level is just barely enough to get some prestige classes. A ranger/barbarian/horizon walker (desert) never has to worry about fatigue after rage, for example. But if the key point is surviving rather than kicking ass, you might want to go for a crusader from "tome of battle: book of nine swords". They have some "combat as healing" powers, and a delayed damage mechanic to give a friend time to heal you. I would suggest you get some playing cards to simulate the random mechanic associated with the class. Plus, you can do a little of healing your friends while fighting with one of the stances. Since your companions are also in the line of DM's fire, that could be appreciated by them. Speaking of friends, you are just high enough level to get the Leadership feat. That is always useful in tons of ways. Frankly it also depends on the kind of danger the DM throws at you. Combat stuff? Trap stuff? Other stuff? Warlock 6 (from "complete arcane") can get "Flee the scene" which is an at-will dimension door that even conveniently leaves behind a dying illusion of you. That might shift the bad ju-ju away from you, for example, and also get you out of a number of traps, etc.
