Need some Details on the original White Plume Mountain [spoilerfest]

Felon

First Post
Looking at the 3e conversion of White Plume Mountain, I see there's a pretty cool map that references sites in close proximity to the mountain: Thingizzard (and her potions), Dead Gnolls' Eye Socket, Castle Mumo, and the Twisted Thickets.

So, first thing I'm wondering is if the players are supposed to get this map. If so, then it's likely they'll consider some of that stuff worth looking into, so is any of that stuff detailed at ll in the origianl module, even in passing? Any info at all would be appreciated.

Thanks. I actually just came across the web enhancement haphazardly, by searching the word "Thingizzard". Oddly, it provides stat blacks for her and Dragotha that are far too tough for the characters who would be tackling White Plume Mountain.

Well, we're drawing a wrap on WPM. The party did pretty well until they reached the boiling mud room. Mario Bros these guys ain't! The scout and monk kept trying to negotiate the platforms with some elaborate plan involving the 50 feet of rope that the rogue brought along (nobody else had any!), which made the rogue so impatient. Confident that the group was overthinking the situation, the rogue started springing across the platforms. Got as far as the sixth before he pooched a roll and plunged headlong into the boiling mud. The the monk also pooched a roll and went down, dragging the scout (tethered to him by that rope) with him.

Meanwhile, the beguiler and sorcerer negotiated the ceiling via spiderclimb spells (which tells you everything about D&D problem-solving right there).

That's a ridiculous TPK.

Or, gee, they could have used a rope of climbing.
Or traded off two pairs of Slippers of Spiderclimbing.
Or cast Levitate and pulled themselves along the walls or ceiling.
Or used a climber's kit and rope.

I have no idea why people don't buy more than 50' of rope.
Maybe they are only thinking of hanging people?

No. Not at all.

That doesn't mean that later designers haven't had fun later. For instance,
Dragotha
turned up in the Age of Worms adventure path.

Cheers!
