I recently implemented a house rule where PCs regain hitpoints per hour of rest/minimal activity instead of the standard per day of rest in the hopes of not only speeding things up in the adventure, but avoid using clerics as medics. So far it's too early to tell how it will ultimately work out since combat has been spaced far enough for the PCs to get sufficient rest, but that's going to change  But I'm debating about spellcasters. If combat comes knocking for the PCs ever few hours, they're to be relegated -- again -- to the background with their crossbows once they've exhausted their spell slots. To allow them to some spellcasting, I'm thinking of implementing the following rule: Sorcerers can "burn" spell slots to cast their spells again after it reaches zero an additional number of times equal to the original spell slots at that level. Each time they cast a spell, the spell slot becomes a negative. The maximum number of "burned" spell slots a sorcerer can cast at a particular level is the negative of that spell slot number. A 6th level sorceress, for example, without bonuses, can cast 3rd level spells an additional 3 times after exhausting her standard 3 slots, which would read "-3". Rest neutralizes one negative slot per day per each spell level. Thus, the sorceress above, if she had reached -4 for her zero level spells as well as -3 for her third level spells, would be at -3 and -2 respectively the next day after resting. Note: The above houserule would only apply to arcane casters. Thoughts? I haven't figured out what to do with wizards yet. I'm thinking of using a different rule where they would have to take a number of standard rounds equal to the spell level they're trying to cast as they try to recall the casted spell. Oh, and there would be an accumulating +1 standard action each time they cast the same spell again.
