Neogi - how have you used them?

Well, Second-Edition-wise, the neogi are all over arcane space. They were a pretty central Spelljammer villain, as those things went.

Third-Edition-wise, they're in Monster Manual II. I've used one since the book came out.. immediately after the book was released, since I'm a fan of the creatures.

The PCs were searching for some missing women (for rather convoluted reasons), and eventually tracked the bandits who'd kidnapped them back to an old fort in the wilderness (the Merithian Fortress, from Eden Games' Wonders out of Time).

I'd added another basement to the fortress, within which dwelled the neogi who'd dominated the bandit chieftain. The neogi also had the women down there, and was using them as its servants. He also had some abyssal maws on loan, so to speak. The PCs of course slew the neogi and the maws and rescued the women.. but they were certainly a bit unsettled by the neogi, especially with his mind-control tricksies.

I was going to use the race as a big villain race, but didn't.. but if the PCs go back to that area, they'll find more obnoxious neogi causing trouble, perhaps...

I used the planar varient (the tso) as interplanar slavers. One was famous for caressing the ranger's hair and saying, "This one looks like good breeding stock." He didn't live long. :D

Man, I love Neogi. (I do use the old illo for them, though.) They are the 'drow' of my desert world, being the Mysterious Race That Runs Things Behind The Scenes. They're slavers, possess strange magic, have these underground hive-city things they live in.

I have a question. In Monster Manual II, do the Neogi have any specific powers over their slaves (say, umber hulks or otherwise?) In 2E, they had slaves, but absolutely no way to enslave them.

I played it back then as the Neogi having a special power to charm any Umber Hulk it sees, no saving throw allowed - I justified it by saying that there was a special pheromone that Neogi released that make Umber Hulks especially subservient to them. Made them VERY nasty.

As for how I played them, They immediately strike me as having a ferengi like personality. In fact, the designer probably had the ferengi in mind when designing them - or at least it seems that way to me.

Tso

I've also used the tso in my Planescape campaign. One PC ended up trading with them for information (and a ride on their planar sailing vessel) in order to rescue another PC from achaierai. In return, he agreed to forge them a magebane sword (with various harsh consequences if the contract is breached, of course).
Since the sword is done, I'm going to have to figure out an excuse to keep them around. I rather enjoy them as reluctant and mercenary allies.

We're do I find the Neogi (SPiderlegged eel things) and how have you used them in the past?

When I was young- they were one of the main villians in a SJ campeign. One had stolen the knowledge of how to make Visionaries from Elminster- leading to a war between Elminster's spectral knights and the neogis'.

Later- I used one as a scout from another planet that had crashed on the pc world. It had been captured and put in a freak show- the party freed it and used it as an advisor.

My future campeign: I may use one as a Saint (a material-bound minor god). They often get physally twisted- so it will make sense.

Visionaries as in the comic and cartoon? Very cool.

They were originally the major villain race of the 2nd edition spelljamming setting (along with mindflayers, beholders and eventually scro). I believe they were first presented in the original spelljammer campaign setting boxed set which is now available as an ESD on svgames.com in their downloads section. They show up in a bunch of spelljammer products. They used umber hulks as servants and used slaves to power their lifejammers.

Merchants

The Neogi in my campaign runs the Slave Warren in my campaign and the PCs just met them. It was great letting them go to the "Nexus" to buy items that they wanted (it was really the first chance to buy items in the campaigns).

The catch is the Nexus is based of an underdark bizaar thread that was around several months ago. The characters are pretty much 10th or 11th and I think they realize most of the "lowly" merchants are well above their level. They had to walk on eggshells, surrounded by some of the most powerful and unusual creatures in my world.

This also is a thanks to all of the fun and nasty ideas I stole/borrowed. They freaked out on the homeless street urchin with the long cloak that would open his cloak and say "pssst, hey, wanna buy a Holy Defender? No, what about an Illithid Slayer....no, don't tell anyone!" They also really liked the Used Golem shop including an overly pushy and slick gnome salesman.

They said they had their first "Brian moment" in a long time. (Brian used to run our campaigns, and no matter where you were or how powerful you were, you would get beaten up in any bar in the world).
