I'm sitting on the fence on this one. Storywise, we're looking at another case of Akira Syndrome (where a long story gets compressed down to a couple hours or so. Another prime example of this is the movie version of X). However, I do have faith in Weta being at the helm of the SFX. Also, it'll be quite different from the anime version, since Gainax is giving ADV and Weta free reign in terms of adapting the story and is encouraging a different take on it. I think it'll come down to how the script turns out and who'll be directing it.
As a side note, it should be pointed out that Gainax did some live action SFX/kaiju stuff in its very early days. Also, Hideaki Anno (the director of Eva) has since gone on to do live action films of his own, though he won't be involved with this adaptation.
So, we'll have three versions: the anime, the manga (which is the best version so far with a more humane tone to it), and eventually the live action movie.
