Having done a ton of research to add some Netheril into an ongoing campaign I'm running, my take on Elves, and Netheril, lines up almost exactly like @Maxperson. Elves in my campaign have deep lore knowledge, pass that lore and learning down amongst themselves, and things that are 3,000 to 5,000 years in the past aren't a stretch. Adventurer elves are a different thing, though, they're not spending a lot of time with history. Re: lore/fluff and Canon, according to WOTC, is that everything printed in 5e Hardbacks is Canon, unless superceded by a different 5e Hardcover. And WOTC doesn't really differentiate between setttings such that a certain book is "FR" or "not FR". Every table is free to use whatever they want, but Mordenkainen's, as well as any other Hardback since 2014 is "Canon". That being said, the stuff without rules, such as the Scrolls that @Maxperson mentioned, are great fodder for me as a Referee to make into gameable material, and to make it better fit my world and my conceptualization of Netheril, the fall, and what things might look like today. I'll also readily adapt 1e, 2e, and 3e materials in, such as 10th level spells. I much prefer less defined things, where I am not beholden to "this is all it can do, cause its what it says", and I can weave my own stories and plots.
