Not really, the paladin and cleric have similar abilties.  The power bonus to AC makes up for the lack of a shield, and it doesn't stack with other power bonuses.  Just make the power require staff, spear or polearm.  In fact most if not all of their powers should require staff, spear or polearm.</blockquote>
