I got into an online game recently where the GM wanted all characters to have a custom race or class. I came up with this class, and I'm curious to see what people think of it. I'd rate it as somewhat underpowered, unless your GM is a dope in which case it might easily be overpowered.
Shape Stealer
BAB: As cleric
Saves: As Monk
HD: 1d8
Skillpoints 4 per level
Class Skills: Climb, Jump, Swim, Craft,Profession, Hide, move silently, disguise, Listen, spot, Wilderness Lore, Knowlege (Nature), Knowlege (Planes), Speak Language
Weapon Proficiencies:
Simple and Martial
Armour Proficiencies:
Light and Medium
Class Powers:
Feats: At second level and every three levels thereafter Shape Stealers gain a bonus feat from the Wildshape Feats list or Fly-by-attack, Improved flight, Improved swimming, Multiattack, Multidexterity, snatch, wingover (MotW).
Shape Stealers gain their power from the use of the Ritual of Becoming. The use of this ritual is not widely known. Currently the secret is held only by a few families and the occasional apprentice. The ritual require sufficient dedication that it can only be used by those who take the Shape Stealer class.
Shape Stealers may make use of the powers of the ritual as many times per day as their class level.
The ritual has three uses.
The Minor Ritual can be performed as many times per day as the Shape Stealer can call on his powers. It takes 15 min. to perform and in the course of the ritual the Shape Stealer must consume a small portion of the flesh or blood of the creature whose shape he wishes to assume. At the completion of the ritual he takes the shape of the creature as though he had used the greater shapeshifting power (In Masters of the Wild.) and remains in that shape until he wishes to turn back. The creature need not be killed or present for this use of the power.
The Major Ritual can be performed once per level for free. It can be performed more often, but the Shape Stealer must pay 50 XP per HD of the creature. This ritual takes 1 hr to perform and the shape stealer must eat the heart (Or equivalent organ) in the course of the ritual. This allows the user to take the form of the creature whose heart he ate as many times per day as he can call upon the power of the ritual from them on. This also works as though using the Greater wildshift power.
The True Ritual takes such an awesome toll upon it's user that it can be used only a few times in the life of even the greatest Shape Stealer. (Whenever the charater could have gained a stat advancement from gaining a level IE 4,8,12... he may instead perform this ritual.) The Ritual has three parts. First is an hour long ritual that requires either the true name of the traget of the ritual, or a piece of his flesh. The target must be alive at this point. Second the Shape Stealer must single handedly defeat his target and remove it's heart. The third phase is a 24 hour long ritual in which the Shape stealer consumes the heart. The stealer may from then on assume the shape of the target as though he had used the Major ritual, except that he also gains the targets supernatural and spell-like abilities, and his type becomes that of the shape he wears along with all immunities and vulerabilities of that type. Shape stealers have learned the hard way not to get killed in the shape of an outsider. Many Shape stealers die while attempting this ritual when they attempt to defeat creatures like dragons and beholders.
Summary: A member of this class can change his shape LVL times per day. He can either assume the form of anything whose flesh he has handy through the use of the minor ritual, or he can assume a form he has gained through the use of the major and true rituals.
