The smoke ooze is actually a volatile collection of much smaller organisms. The component cells, almost impossible to see with the naked eye, are always in a state of motion, floating around in a gray, smoke-like cloud, rejoining the main body mass, or attacking prey. They have the ability to mimic the shape of terrain features they have encountered, such as walls, columns, or rocks. The first sign that a smoke ooze is in the area is the sudden appearance of smoke, with no fire. Some smoke oozes do nicely when they manage to set themselves up in a narrow corridor, so that prey is guaranteed to pass through their cloud, although this strategy is purely accidental unless they have been set up by a spellcaster or other creature using it as a trap. Combat: The smoke ooze is usually disguised as a section of wall or other scenery, waiting for prey to draw near. When it senses prey, it releases a paralytic mist, which appears to be a cloud of smoke. It relies upon this cloud to debilitate prey, attacking only when it feels prey has been subdued, or if it is itself attacked. Paralytic Mist (Ex): The smoke ooze is constantly surrounded by a 10-foot radius cloud of smoke-colored particles which attack the nervous system of anything with which it comes in contact. Creatures in the cloud's area must make a Fortitude save (DC 15): success indicates it is stunned for 1d4 rounds, and failure indicates it is paralyzed for 2d4 rounds. The ooze can suppress this cloud while in disguise, waiting for prey to come by. Suppressing or resuming this cloud is a standard action. Although it appears to be smoke, it does not smell like it, and creatures with the Scent ability can immediately detect the difference, as will a Spot check (DC 15). Acid (Ex): A smoke ooze secretes a digestive acid that quickly dissolves organic material. Any melee hit deals acid damage, as does any unarmed attack or grapple made against the smoke ooze. The acid cannot harm stone or metal. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, the smoke ooze must hit with its slam attack. If it gets a hold, it can constrict. Constrict (Ex): A smoke ooze deals automatic slam and acid damage with a successful grapple check. Mimic Shape (Ex): A smoke ooze can assume the general shape of any grayish object that fills roughly 25 cubic feet (2.5 feet by 2.5 feet by 4 feet), such as a section of wall, a stone column, or a wide door frame. The creature cannot substantially alter its size, though, nor can it change coloration, so they limit themselves to grayish, stone-hued objects. A smoke ooze's body is soft and yielding, with a wet texture, no matter what appearance it might present. Anyone who examines the smoke ooze can detect the ruse with a successful Spot check rolled against the ooze's Hide roll. While the ooze is hiding, its mist cloud retreats into the main body, roiling out like smoke when prey is near. Blindsight (Ex): An ooze's entire body is a primitive sensory organ that can ascertain prey by scent and vibration within 60 feet. Ooze qualities: Immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, and polymorphing. Not subject to critical hits. Skills: The smoke ooze gains a +8 racial bonus to all Hide checks. [/QUOTE]
