After our second session of Arcana Unearthed (which went incredibly and unexpectedly well) I find the four PCs about to confront a character which could quite possibly make a very memorable antagonist. At least for a good while. Here's the lowdown: After completing their Truename retreat and receiving their Truenames, they characters returned to the town sponsoring the retreat (along with several other NPCs) to kick back and enjoy themselves. There was a large nocturnal festival held in their honor. Unfortunately, that festival was disrupted by a rather strange attack. Strange, demonic, bat-like creatures (vargouilles) began attack townspeople, and what the PCs believe were undead destroyed the mayor's manor. No trace of the mayor could be found, and four of the townsfolk were bitten by the vargouilles deadly bite. The PCs chose to tend the poisoned townsfolk, and procure a special cure for them from a medicine man in the mountains. The next morning they departed. Just before the reached the mountains, they came across merchant carrying raw adamantine ore. The merchant let slip that a mining operation was taking place at the base of the mountains, where the PCs needed to go. The PCs got the impression from the merchant that the operation was a bit less than legal. It was run by humans, within giant lands. Anyway, the PCs kept going, figuring they could bypass the town if need be. But then they were caught by a group of patrols, which told them more about the situation at the mountains. They've discovered that a nasty fellow by the name of Gisrael Dhonavan is running the operation as well as the small garrison posted there. A fight with the patrol ensued, and the PCs won with smarts, and managed to kill only two of the 5 attacking soldiers. The other 3 were captured, quickly interrogated, and sent on their way. The PCs plan on raiding the town. The NPC with them fears the medicine man, and her master, may have been captured by this fellow, he seems to have rounded up a fair amount of local thieves and brigands. The PCs already know that this Gisrael is, quite frankly, an ass. Even his own soldiers are afraid of him. They view him as nothing more than a bully and dictator. While I haven't entirely decided who's really in charge of establishing the mining operation, Gisrael is the hands-on muscle, and running the mine in such a way as to boost his own personal gain. I guess my question is, what else can I do with this fellow. I don't want to give any stats or anything like that, in case of lurking players, but this guy is a mid-level warrior type with a real taste for wealth and power. He's strong, intelligent, and fairly cunning. Any fight with this guy should be well thought-out, and on his terms. But in the long run, I'd love to hear any suggestions anybody has. Where this operation might lead him, various other options that could lead the PCs in a wide variety of directions. I have my own ideas, but I always like hearing others as well. Thanks all!
