New Formats, and philosophies...

So, I was thinking about some of the new formats we've been told about in the upcoming products threads... And I have to say I'm pretty happy.

I like the fact that WoTC doesn't seem to be sticking with formats just because of tradition.

I think we gamers for some reason or another tend to get stuck in the "this is how it was done at this point, so if it doesn't fit that mold it's somehow wrong" mindset.

If they aren't afraid to make changes in order to find ways to give us stuff in ways that end up being more useful at my table, however, I think this is a great thing for the game.

Take the rules compendium... From what I hear it's paper back sure, but it LAYS FLAT! That in my opinion was someone thinking about what would be best at the table. Hardbound books look nice on my shelf... But if there's a better way? GO FOR IT! (How many times have you sat with one hand holding the page in your book open while you did whatever it was you were refering to in the book with the other hand?)

The DM box also sounds awesome. Give me the DM a big box full of stuff I will need, with the box serving as a way to keep it all together and handy- Awesome.

On a related note, it also seems like they're thinking on this extends into the game itself. With the new products it seems like they're willing to look at what they can do to meet more players needs and do that, instead of just picking one type of thing and doing it over and over and over again.

To the current crew at WoTC- keep up the good work!

I am particularly excited about the board games and the new class directions, monk is my fave published. Of the unconfirmed, ebooks and PC games yes please!

*I have never really forgiven WotC for not producing Monster Compendium: Monsters of Faerun in he FR colour scheme! :p
