Does anyone else think they are a very redundant and unnecessary addition to D&D? You can just have the same effect by substituting a class feature with another.
The previews on WotC website for Monks and Sorcerers could perhaps hide the possibility that other cases of substitution levels may eventually have a modified HD or a different number of skill points, or a different skill list (but not different BAB or ST, otherwise it would become more complicated since they'll have an effect on following levels). If that will be the case, then substitution levels would have a point to exist, but otherwise they are an unnecessary new "building block" for characters IMO.
I think it would have been easier to just say that your Sorcerer can exchange 1 spell known of level X with a special ability Y. It spares a lot of explanation...
