I haven't read any David Brin, but I like that hermaphrodite idea there too; that's a fairly unique take on a race, alright. Also, I've thought about using gnolls as beastmen too! But I would want to give them a gore attack probably, similar to the minotaur's but less powerful.
Wow! Lots of activity in this thread while I was asleep last night! I can't possibly respond to all of the posts in great detail, but here's a few highlights. Gothmog: Hey, some great ideas in there. I actually like those racial stats quite a bit too -- they seem really appropriate for the models themselves. I am, however, trying to not go too far down the obvious "barbarian" aspect of the kroot; savage pastoral nomads might be a bit too obvious. Although I really like the ritualised hunt idea in there. Ovinomancer: Heh, heh. Great name. I have read that fluff, although not recently, so thanks for the reminders! The idea of a highly mutable kroot genepool is actually a really great idea, but probably not appropriate for my campaign, where the idea is that folks were all bred by some ancient (and extinct?) breeder race that formerly ruled the world. BFG: Yes, I do recognize most of those names! As I said, we seem to share an awful lot of the same tastes. I'd love to see that word document. You mind emailing it? I can pick it up at jdyal@peoplepc.com. I don't use that address too much anymore because it's turned into a junk mail magnet, but I'll make a point of looking for that file. Monte at Home: Yeah, castes seem to work particularly well for the kroot figures, especially since the krootox and kroot hounds seem to somehow be "failed" kroots in some way or another (hey, maybe that's an idea I can riff on too...) or at least related somehow to the kroot. Besides, who doesn't love a good caste system? :) d4: Yeah, I really doubted I was the first person to come up with the idea of human "races" as the result of them being bred as slaves for generation after generation. I'm not a real expert on avian physiognamy, but hey, bird's don't have external divergent sexual organs, breasts, enlarged hips to accomodate a birth canal, etc. I think, other than some slight size differences (females are typically larger) most of the sexual dimorphism is cosmetic and behavior driven; the males engage in all kinds of wierd display, and thus have to be colorful and brash, while the females can be much more pragmatic. I haven't read any David Brin, but I like that hermaphrodite idea there too; that's a fairly unique take on a race, alright. Also, I've thought about using gnolls as beastmen too! But I would want to give them a gore attack probably, similar to the minotaur's but less powerful.
