New magic system help (similar to materia FF7)

So for lack of a better term, I'm trying to create a materia kind of magic system where spells are stored in orbs marble sized. Now to give some back ground this isnt a FF7 campaign, this is part of my world that I have been working on for a year or so now. The world is based on a fabric (similar to spacetime) except it's taken on a very literal meaning in the world. I have a holy Lancer dragoon type faction that represent needles which mend the earth, I have an opposing dual sword knight faction that represents scissors which cut fabric and destroy it. There is quite a bit of religious overtones and stuff like that. Magic is accomplished by creating waves in the fabric to produce magical effects.

Well anyway, that's the least you need to know. This materia represents the fabric of the world in a knot. And the orb surrounds the knot which is how magic can be transported, used and learned. I'm trying to figure a way of going about this. Obviously the magic will work in a different way for a wizard. Although I have been thinking it may not -HAVE- to work in such a radical way. Clearly the orbs can be treated as scrolls, and perhaps the wizards have staves that can hold these orbs and that would be their "spell book" or something? Perhaps sorcerers can do some sort of ritual that involves melding the orbs in their skin which is their "known" spells?

What do you think? Any ideas to add? Let me add this is with arcana spells online, not divine (I'll deal with that later).
