New Metamagic Feats: Phase Spell aand Incorporeal Spell

Phase Spell (Metamagic)

Your spells are no longer hampered by physical barriers.

Benefit: Your spells can pass through physical barriers, but not magic barriers, such as Wall Of Force. However, a spellcaster may not cast a spell through a barrier if they cannot see the target unless s/he has some form of scrying ability which would allow them to do so. A phased spell increases the spell level by three spell levles.

Incoporeal Spell (Metamagic)

Your spells can affect incorporeal beings.

Benefit: your spells are turned incorporeal so that you may be able to affect incorporeal beings. Being incorporeal it will not affect non-corporeal beings An incorporeal spell is increased by 3 spell levels.

Phase spell: No way. No way at all.
A spellcaster with this and greater scrying could defeat nearly any foe with ease, just by having lots of walls in the way to stop counterattacks.

Incoporeal Spell: Looks fine.
I'd reduce the level increase. +1 should be enough unless you can think of abusive combos; maybe +2.

Geoff.

If magical barriers include... (Phase Spell)

If magical barriers means magical barriers such Wall of Fire and Ice, prismatic so on and so forth It should not be to bad.

If force barriers only I would have to agree with Watson.

Make it magic barriers, maybe dependant on the thickness of barriers and caster level (or some such).

Easy way, magic barriers distrupt the feat and add one spell lvl to the base three you have. Fewer variables to be added or subtracted as it is being tested.

Otherwise I wish I had thought of both!

Yeah, it means any magic barrier. However, the one thing about it is that it can pass through doors without setting off things like traps or explosive runes.

When it comes to the increased level of Incorporeal Spell, I did think it could be somewhat powerful, the feat.

There's no real guidelines for assigning a spell slot increase for Metamagic spells.

On a purely conceptual level if it was me I would make Phase Spell make it so that area effects and/or things like rays pass through solid barriers regardless. for other spells it seems redundant to me. Great idea though...just dont really see a need for it for "non physical" spells.
Incorporeal Spell is a great idea. In all honesty if all it does is let you get at incorporeal beings without the 50% miss chance, and it keeps the spell from affecting corporeal targets, I dont think it needs any level adjustment. Its a lot like Energy Substitution in a way.

I agree with Merlion. Incorporeal spell should be fine with no level increase.

I take it that phase spell is analogous to the Arcane Archer ability?

Phase Arrow: At 6th level, the arcane archer can launch an arrow once per day at a target known to her within range, and the arrow travels to the target in a straight path, passing through any nonmagical barrier or wall in its way. (A wall of force, a wall of fire, or the like stops the arrow.) This ability negates cover, concealment, and even armor modifiers, but otherwise the attack is rolled normally. This is a spell-like ability. (Shooting the arrow is part of the action.)

If so, I think +3 spell levels would be quite fair for a phase spell.

Good job!

I think for clarity I would re-work phase spell like this, myself:

Phase Spell
You can cast a spell without a line of effect.

A phased spell can pass through any barrier or effect that does not extend into the etheral plane. Note that spells with a target entry still require line of sight in order to affect a target on the other side of a barrier. +3 levels.

Cleaner & the only spells that require line of site are targeted spells. Area of effect & aimed spells don't. (You can throw a fireball "30' beyond the edge of the obscuring mist", or aim a disentegrate ray at something that's invisible)
