New Podcast aimed at ENWorld GMs and DMs

This is a one time announcement concerning a new podcast I am co-hosting called Chronicles: The Pathfinder Podcast.

Chronicles: PFPC is the newest podcast on the D20 radio network of shows which focus on RPGs and gaming.

The subject matter of Chronicles makes the podcast different from others you may have listened to in the past. The show is divided roughly into two parts:

The first part is intended for a general audience of both players and GMs and covers RPG news and release discussions for the Paizo product lines as well as discussions concerning Paizo’s world of Golarion and other Pathfinder related topics. The subject matter of the first part of the podcast is something you are probably quite familiar with in gaming related podcasts.

The second part of the podcast, however, is very different. We strongly caution players against listening to the second part of the podcast and the segment is clearly identified during the show, because the podcast can RUIN your gaming experience.

The second part of the podcast, the Chronicle, is intended for consumption by all of the FRPG GMs and DMs on ENWorld. We review and discuss Paizo adventure products: Modules, Adventure Paths and Pathfinder Society Scenarios in spoilerific detail. In fact, if we have not thoroughly spoiled the module or adventure being discussed by the end of this segment of the show, we will have failed at our objective.

Our discussion of the featured adventure is not confined to just reviewing the adventure, but discusses potential problems and how to deal with them, how the adventure may be improved, changed, altered or otherwise integrated into your campaign either as a one-off or as part of a longer story arc or adventure path. If you are a DM or GM? This is the part of the podcast that is aimed squarely at you. It’s the kind of thing we post about on ENWorld often and it is one of the things I have always loved most about this site.

While of particular interest to players of the Pathfinder Role Playing Game, those DMs of 3.xx of 4E who wish to use Paizo adventure products in their own Dungeons and Dragons campaigns should find lots to interest them in the adventure discussion segment of the show, too.

The first episode of the podcast features a review and discussion of the Paizo module Crypt of the Everflame, an introductory module to the PFRPG for characters of 1st to 2nd level. You can find this and subsequent episodes of the podcast at our right here. Discussions of the podcast and any hints or suggestions you may have can be made here.

Episode #2 will feature a discussion with Jason Bulmahn, the lead designer of PFRPG and the author of Crypt of the Everflame and the module’s sequel Masks of the Living God. Again, the subject matter of the discussion is again, very adventure centric and principally aimed at the adventure which is the featured adventure in the episode.

The people I’ve come to know and discussed RPGs and gaming over the years here on ENWorld are precisely the people I’m making this podcast for: ENWorld DMs and GMs are the intended audience for this podcast. So give us a try and drop me a note or PM if there is something you would like to see or change, or just a comment of encouragement – or discouragement, for that matter.

It is too bad this post was shuffled over to the RPG Industry Forum. I think podcasts deserves their fair shot in the general forum for more exposure. :(

I did listen earlier today to the podcast and enjoyed it. Hope to catch the future episodes as they are released.

Yep, it was really difficult to find this thread again after I listened to the podcast.

The podcast is really cool to get an overview of the releases for pathfinder and some information around it. And it's much easier to access than paizo's website or else. The discussion about the adventure was really great for any DM, because you don't have to check for everything yourself. You may justlisten to the podcast and know all the sticking points, problems, mistakes and everything. Really cool.

So nice work guys, keep it up!

Yeah, I can't say as it seems equitable that community podcasts that have no economic interest are treated the same as products for sale by commercial publishers.

That is, to my way of thinking, a distinction with a difference. Especially as this forum receives so little traffic.

It's difficult to "get the word out" in this forum, but it would appear that our download count for the podcast is already among the top few at D20 Radio, so I am pleased with the initial reception to the podcast.

Nevertheless, it is what it is. In case you missed it, we have released out third episode of the podcast, finishing our deconstruction of the Price of Immortality Trilogy: Crypt of the Everflame (Episode 01), Masks of the Living God (Episode 02) and now City of Golden Death (Episode 03).

Episode 02 features an interview with Jason Bulmahn in the Chronicles section where he answers questions about the design process of Crypt of the Everflame and Masks of the Living God, and in Epsidoe 03, module author Jason Frost appears in the Chronicles section to give his take on the module in a similar spoilerific fasion.

The intent of the podcast is to feature an interview with the author of each module under review in that episode. We think this format gives the author a chance to respond to any serious questions we might have and explain those aspects of the module that were left on the cutting room floor, as it were.

Obviously, the nature of our review process means that this interview is not intended for a general audience and is instead intended only for Game Masters. While it is not ideal, it is the best approach for dealing with specifics and detailed discussion of design decisions.

The link to the podcasts is in my sig and they are, as always, otherwise available on iTunes by searching for "chronicles" or "pathfinder", amongst other terms.

I rarely think to check this forum for things like podcasts. I do try and do so a little more often, but it would certainly catch more attention in the main General forum.

Cool! The subscribed threads list at least helped me catch this announcement. Looking forward to listening.

I subscribed to your RSS, so I'm always in the loop. That's no problem for me. But podcasts, if they are not by WotC official or so, surely are no industry think (or do you own a company which launches your podcast? The mods should spend another thought on that. Maybe your podcast sounds so professional that they didn't expect it to be coming from the community ;)

I have already listened to the player part of the third episode and it's again nice. But sometimes the difference in volume between the different speakers is a little to high. I guess, in the beginning it's mostly you, Steel, who is relatively quite. In the end of the player session it is getting better. But this episode is also a little bit lengthy.

I do listen to the spoilerific discussion of the modules, although it's pretty unlikely I will ever DM them. But when I'll ever play them, I guess, I'll hve forgotten more than half of the information. But it's really good to listen as a DM ,even if one doesn't want to DM it. It tells much about adventures design or to which thins a DM should pay attention. And you do have some brilliant ideas about how to bridge some gaps in the adventures.

Well, in fairness to Russ, he does provide a link on the front page when we send a news scoop that a new episode has been released -- and that link is e-mailed to ENworlders in the newsletter. So that is a great beneift.

I think our news scoop was not posted on Friday as a consequence of the ENnie nomination announcement, but that was just a consequence of timing.

If you subscribe via RSS or iTunes, either way, you'll get the podcast immediately on release of a new episode (as between the two, RSS is faster).

Heh - yeah, my own fault for not checking the main news page. I tend to bookmark EN World straight to the forums section, not the front page.

I do skim the newsletter though since I don't make a habit of checking the front page.

Yeah, I will need to make sure I have it added to my RSS feeds. The surest way for me to keep up with new episodes.

Thanks!
