New Spell - Shatterscry

What level do you think this spell should be?

Shatterscry (Abjuration)

Level: Wiz/Sor ?
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: See below
Target: See below
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving throw: None or Will negates (object, see below)
Spell Resistance: No

Shatterscry is a spell used to not only stop a scrying attempt, but if the caster is an arcane caster, to temporarily disable their ability to scry.

When a caster detects (by use of the Scry skill or an Intelligence check) a scrying focus, Shatterscry may be cast with the focus as the nominal target. The scrying attempt is dispelled if the caster succeeds on a level check (against DC 11 + caster level of scryer.)

If the focus is dispelled in this manner, a feedback wave travels back into the spell focus. If this is a natural pool or font such as is used by a divine caster, the wave has no effect. If it is an arcane focus (a mirror) then it shatters, unless it is a magical mirror, in which case it gets a Will save to prevent this effect. As using a mirror to Scry does not count as 'wielding' or 'attending' the mirror, it makes its save using its own rather than the enemy caster's saving throw bonuses.

While scrying for scrying threads, I found this old one.

I'd say it's a 3rd level spell, on the primary theory that defense is easier than offense. However, I think the spell needs a lot of polishing. Objects can make Will saves?

hmm Shatterscry. I like it.

The object is in the control of the caster, but a will save? I'd say a fortitude save since its a mirror. Check Shatter spell for it's save qualifications.

On a side note, Scryblind? Will save or person CANNOT scry at all for 1 hr/level of the caster of Scryblind. <chuckles> Just a fun thought.

Scry trace? Trace who the scryer is?

Magical items have all three saves equal to 2 + half their caster level (I assume crafters level in the case of a wonderous item or weapon). I think though that a Fort save would be more appropriate.

My one question is what would happen if the scrying originated from a Crystal Ball? Same as for a mirror?

Yeah, I'd assume that the intent was to cover all such objects. If phrased the general case then there wouldn't be arguments later from a character who had created an "amulet of far vision" or somesuch.

If the spell simply called for a Fort save on the object (if any), then that'd be simple and broadly applicable. For visual effect, pools would become turbulent and cloudy, etc.

I agree that Scrying could use some work, and I ran into this spell when hunting around for ideas to make my own house rules. Such a spell would help.
