Hey gang,
I don't know if this would be any use to you, but I had one of my starship templates get cut out of that preview article I wrote for Dungeon #113, and I just realized I never posted it here. It's pretty short and simple, but it may do ya. And hey, more free material can't hurt.
Armadillo-class Fortress Ship
The Armadillo-class starship is essentially the “armored car” of starships. Most starships of this class are designed to haul valuable cargo from one location to another and protect against theft or piracy. These starships boast increased hull strength and dense armor, as well as special defenses that are engineered to keep the ship intact and the cargo safe. Additionally, manufacturers outfit these ships with a heavy plasma cannon in order to fend off marauders or clear a path to safety. Most Armadillo-class ships are slower than their progenitors, but make up for this in the sheer amount of damage they can sustain while under attack.
Ships of this classification can be of almost any size provided that they can carry moderate amounts of cargo. In some cases, the cargo may be passengers; some Armadillo-class ships function as prisoner transports that must guard against raids to free incarcerated comrades, while others serve as personal vessels for the wealthy and the powerful. Prison transfers frequently occur aboard the smaller vessels, but more often they carry valuable items that cannot be trusted to standard transport ships. Heavy and superheavy ships of this type are usually intended to transport large amounts of valuable cargo rather than passengers, particularly if the cargo is some valuable mineral that can be transported in its raw form.
Since many of these ships are slow and bulky, a small contingent of lighter and more well-armed fighter craft usually serves as the ship’s escort. Larger battleships and even an entire battle groups frequently guards ships carrying particularly valuable cargoes, such as supplies for a long-range fleet. Some Armadillo-class ships function completely on their own, and these ships are autonomous vessels designed to discretely ferry cargo and attract little attention to themselves.
Armadillo-class Template (PL 7)
The Armadillo-class template can be applied to any PL 6 light or heavier starship. The starship’s design specs should be adjusted as follows.
Hit Die: + 1/4 current hit die (e.g. a ship with 20d20 HD becomes 25d20)
Armor Upgrade: Neutronite (hardness 40, tactical speed –500 feet)
Defense Systems Upgrade: Light fortification, repair drones.
Weapons Systems Upgrade: Heavy Plasma Cannon (18d8 damage, crit 20, range 4,000 feet, adds on to any existing weapons systems)
Grappling System Upgrade: Tractor beam emitter (replaces grapplers).
