I wrote a new template -- any comments? I imagine this territory has been covered before, but I don't recall seeing it anywhere on the boards (probably covered in the BoVD).

Soulless (template)
This template can be applied to any corporeal creature (hereinafter referred to as the "base creature") which normally possesses a soul, be it humanoid, monstrous humanoid, giant, or aberration, as determined by the GM to suit her campaign setting. While cases can be made that other types (animals, beasts, magical beasts, etc.) have souls, this template should not be applied to outsiders, constructs or undead, and wouldn't be recommended for fey.
Hit Dice: same as base creature
Attacks: Same as base creature.
Special attacks: The base creature retains its original special attacks, and gains one of the following:
Despairing Gaze (Su): As the eyes are said to be the windows of the soul, the gaze of one who has lost that spark can be disconcerting. Any mortal creature meeting the gaze of a soulless, and failing a Will save (DC equals 10 + 1/2 soulless' hit dice + Cha modifier) is affected as if by the spell Emotion (despair), suffering a ?2 morale penalty to saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls. This ability, which works as a standard gaze attack, is usually taken by creatures with eyes, and works as if cast by a sorceror of the same hit dice as the base creature.
Despairing Wail (Su): Three times a day, the soulless can voice the pain of its lost spark of divinity, emitting a wail which acts as the spell Emotion (despair) cast by a sorceror of the same hit dice as the base creature. All creatures in a 60-foot radius must make a Will save (DC equals 10 + 1/2 soulless' hit dice + Cha modifier) or suffer a -2 morale penalty to saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls. This is a sonic, mind-affecting avility, usually taken by soulless without "normal" eyes, but possessing vocal ability.
Aura of Despair (Su): Both wild and domesticated animals can sense the unnatural presence of this soulless at a distance of 30 feet. They do not willingly approach nearer than that and panic if forced to do so; they remain panicked as long as they are within that range. Any creature entering that area is affected as if by the spell Emotion (despair) as cast by a sorceror of the base creature's hit dice, suffering a -2 morale penalty to saving throws, attack rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls unless they make a Will save (DC equals 10 + 1/2 soulless' hit dice + Cha modifier). This ability is possessed by soulless which do not otherwise have eyes or a voice.
Special Qualities:
Saves: same as base creature, with adjustments to stats.
Abilities: same as base creature, except as follows: Dex -2, Con -2, Wis -4, Cha -4
Climate/Terrain: Same as base creature.
Challenge Rating: as base creature -1
Alignment: The alignment of a soulless creature slowly moves towards neutral evil. Every week spent without a soul, the character must make a Will save (DC 25) or move one step on the alignment chart closer to neutral evil. If the base creature was already neutral evil, then it moves towards chaotic evil.
