Robert E. Howard's "The Coming Of Conan The Cimmerian"
It's only a year or so old, in quality paperback and pretty cheap...$14.95 SRP.
It's the original Conan stories in sequence of them being published.
I thought they were in chronological order, not published order.

In any case, I second this recommendation, if you want to start with Conan, start with Howard only. A lot of the stuff that de Camp worked with really butchers some of Howard's conceptions of the character.

Naw, it's published order. How else would you start it out with Conan as king of Aquilonia? ;)

Hrmm, I thought they were starting it with "Tower of the Elephant" and working their way up to "Hour of the Dragon". Oh well, Howard's Conan rocks, doesn't really matter what order they put them in.

If you're looing to read the stories in "chronological" order I'd suggest picking up Gollancz's Fantasy Masterworks series. The stories are published in chronological order, but the book is pretty much only available in the UK or through Amazon.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...82174/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2_2/026-9249809-0246007. If you cant get it, the "Dark Storm" chronology while a little different from Gollancz's chronology makes sense to me: http://www.rehupa.com/rippke_chronology.htm

The chronology is as follows:
The Frost-Giant's Daughter
The God in the Bowl
The Tower of the Elephant
The Hall of the Dead
Rogues in the House
The Hand of Nergal
Shadows in the Moonlight
Black Colossus
Queen of the Black Coast
The Snout in the Dark
The Slithering Shadow
A Witch Shall Be Born
The Devil in Iron
The People of the Black Circle
Shadows in Zamboula
Drums of Tombalku
The Vale of Lost Women
The Pool of the Black One
Beyond the Black River
The Black Stranger
Red Nails
Jewels of Gwahlur
Wolves Beyond the Border
The Phoenix on the Sword
The Scarlet Citadel
The Hour of the Dragon

This is the chronology the (highly recommended) Dark Horse comic seems to be following also.

I highly recommend the new Conan comicbook series from Dark Horse.

The art is amazing for a comicbook and the style really fits the feel of setting IMHO. Also the writer captures a lot of the feel of the original Howard stories. The issue of the comic that adapts the Frost Giant's Daughter is basically the exact image I had while reading the original Howard version in "The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian".

Actually they are in order that the stories were written! I think there's one or two that were published out of order.

So, yeah, me fifth (or is it sixth) on The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian.
