True a lot is not known, but there are pieces in oral tradition and later writings. My interpretation is based upon GURPS Celtic Myth, AEG's 7th Sea supplement Avalon, and the novel Mists of Avalon which treat the Druid in a similar manner that is different from the DND Druid. The do not treat the druid as a nature priest living off in the wilds, but rather a combination of diviner, priest, poet, judge, wizard, and loremaster. Druidic training begins with training as a bard (Gurps Celtic Myth; 7th Seas Avalon; and Lancelot's training as a bard in Mists of Avalon). Those bards choosing to take and whom pass an ordeal rise to the level of ollave (priest) and can perform the priestly functions (GURPS Celtic Myth). The Druids, in turn, are chosen from among the ollaves--one does not seek or train to become a druid (GURPS Celtic Myth; Avalon). The druids being dedicated to gaining knowledge, solving riddles, and unlocking secrets/mysteries (GURPS Celtic Myth; Avalon) choose their members from those priests who show a dedication to gaining knowledge and present a discovery or insight showing wisdom at the druidic gathering (GURPS Celtic Myth). GURPS Celtic Myth and Avalon say the secrets that Druids learn allow them to cast magic. The magic they cast also includes what DND calls arcane magic. Merlin is also shown in stories casting what are arcane spells in DND--of course Merlin was probably either part Sidhe (if he was Talisien) or part demon (in some more modern tellings).
