Given that you haven't played in a long time I would suggest playing the Fighter for simple ease of play to start out. A Rogue/Monk is a cool idea, but you may want to start out a little more straight forward than that. What books do you have access to for building a PC? That will greatly effect the answers you are going to get on this. The PHB2 is an excelent source of feats for the mid to high level fighter. Generally I would say go human (more feats and skills) or dwarf (Con boost, small fighting boost against some enemies, dwarven racial weapons are martial), focus on a particular combat style and don't try to be able to do everything. You are not going to be a skill user by any means, and a lot of the class skills for the Fighter, other than Initmidate in IME, don't get used. Don't be afraid to plop some down in cross class skills. Fit them to a concept. For example, if your PC has spent a lot of time as the body guard of a powerful mage he likely has ranks in Spot and Listen (to detect threats) and may have picked up some Knowledge (arcana). Ask your DM what skills will be useful in the game and if you can trade any out on a one to one basis. In my games I regularly let Fighters trade out Ride and Handle Animal for Spot and Listen. If your DM has it, ask if you can use the wealth by level guide lines in Magic Item Compenduim for a 10th level PC. It will make outfiting your PC much easier.
