I'd guess that when the ships were attacked, the Captain followed proper defensive protocal and opened up the ships dimensional anchor to prevent those who had seen the vessel go by from boarding it via teleportation. Sadly, it also means stragglers are left behind, but as they say, the problems of the many outweight the problems of the few. At least, thats how they see it.
