Well, I tagged this as "science," but it could probably equally well go under "technology" or even "art." Anyway, it always seemed like we could a place to discuss the Nobel prizes each year. I'll update the prize announcements throughout the week. Have at it!

I find it funny that the disaster movie folks chose to honor Takaaki Kajita and Arthur B. McDonald long before the Nobel committee: in the movie "2012" - "The Neutrinos are mutating!" is a (comically horrible) restatement of their work.

I find it mildly frustrating sometimes when I see a Facebook meme saying someone who did something heroic should get the Nobel Peace Prize, and that not giving it to them makes the awards corrupt and stupid stupid stupid! That's not what the Nobel Peace Prize is for, any more than the Nobel Prize in Physics would be appropriate. There are other civilian bravery awards for personal acts of heroism.

Chemistry today... that's an "applied science" award in medicine and two "basic science" awards in physics and chemistry...
