That would be a rather interesting way to do it, and I think it could work as an alternative to the way skills are picked in 4e. Essentially, each non-combat role becomes a package of linked skills, adds a bit more flavor and background to the character, and could also grant access to certain utility powers. The Trickster non-combat role could grant training in Acrobatics, Bluff, Stealth, Streetwise and Thievery and could grant access to utility powers related to misdirection, sneaking, and overcoming traps. The Thinker could grant training in Arcana, Dungeoneering, History, Nature and Religion, and grant access to utility powers related to logical persuasion (possibly substituting a relevant knowledge check for a Diplomacy check), doing research and solving problems. The Thug could grant training in Athletics, Endurance, Intimidate and Streetwise, and access to utility powers related to personal toughness and scaring people. The Woodsman could grant training in Athletics, Endurance, Nature, Perception and Stealth, and utility powers related to tracking creatures and deducing information from tracks, and dealing with wilderness hazards. The Herbalist could grant training in Arcana, Diplomacy, Heal, Insight and Nature, and utility powers related to diagnosis and healing. The Entertainer could grant training in Bluff, Diplomacy, Insight, Perception and Streetwise, and utility powers related to changing the mood of individuals and crowds. The Diplomat could grant training in Bluff, Diplomacy, History, Insight and Perception, and utility powers related to detecting plots, assessing the social situation, and dealing with nobles and courtiers. And so on. This could actually develop into a viable alternate sub-system. I will need to think about this some more. Thanks for the inspiration! :)
