One of the things I mean for my character to do is make a book which will give them a bonus to the skills the put in it. Originally they were just going to be in a book but there didn't seem to be a way to do that. Did find a way to do such a thing magically but that doesn't follow the original intent. Then I wondered about the crafting skills. Why not replace the method for making a magical item which increases skills with the one used in standard crafting? Replace the 1,000 gold a day with the craft DC x Skill Check for how many silver towards the final price of the item. Keep the price the same but substantially increase the time required to make the item. (This was before I remembered that this would be per week.) The formula for skills was: Skill bonus squared times 100 gold. (1 x 1) x 100 (2 x 2) x 100 (3 x 3) x 100 etc... Source: Rules of the Game: Making Magic Items (Part Seven) I figured the multiplier could be dropped to times 10 since the benefit isn't instantaneous or constant and would probably require 1 to 10 minutes to activate. But then I wondered, "If making a book that does this is reasonable using this method, what about making the Bracers of Brachiation?" At first it didn't seem likely. They probably are at least slight prehensile and not possible to make using standard means. Then again... We can do things rather close. And an opening/closing grasper wouldn't be that hard to make... Okay then what about Scorching ray? Are you going to say that all magical spells can be reproduced as non-magical craft items? No of course not. Take weapons for example. Can't make a +5 magical weapon using just craft skills. ...Why not? All it does is up the time. After that it's just working with unusual chemicals, minerals, and forging methods. Alright, yes it wouldn't have the ability to affect incorporeal things or go through damage reduction like magical weapons but that seems about it. It would take a long time to make. Might not be worth it. But it would be immune to destroy magic item. Vulnerable to shatter. Hmmm. Guess such weapons aught to become at least lightly enchanted to protect them from such. Can still be taken out by the Dispel + Shatter combo. It would make it harder. Oh! What if we added the "Immune to Sonic Effects" into the item so Shatter couldn't affect it and Dispel wouldn't have anything to knock off? Is that even possible? Pretty sure we can do it. And all they'd need to do is find metals which don't react much or at all to sounds. What about the craft difficulty? You can't tell me it would be the same as a regular sword or item. How about +5 per each +1 you'd normally be giving it magically? And maybe a +5 per per spell level of what you're trying to duplicate? Lemme see, falls under level 3 spell Greater Magic Weapon...+1 per four caster levels with a max of five. Problem. If you go by caster levels that would probably require a crafting skill of 112. Ouch. Doable? Got me. And that's without immunity to sonic or the fact that this would be a permanent spell on the item in question. Bleh. So I ask, is there another way to create non-magical magical items?
