Not giving up on FR after all?

I've heard a lot of speculation lately that, given how hard Eberron is being pushed by WotC, they might eventually more or less drop Forgotten Realms, but a quote from the Monter Manual 3 preview hopefully means they aren't any time soon:

Additionally, many entries contain information about where monsters are likely to appear in the Forgotten Realms and Eberron campaign settings

That's probably because it was an unsubstantiated rumor to begin with. I've never heard anything about FR being dropped in favor of Eberron.

I'm sure they're not planning on dropping it at anytime so soon that there'd be any reason not to mention it in new products like Monster Manual II. After all, they still have FR products Shining South and Ancient Empires on the release schedule.

I'd bet it'll be around for a while yet, though if sales start to slip I'd expect them to cancel it. But as long as they can keep re-hashing everything every few years with a new rules set, there's no reason for that to happen, right?

I doubt that WoTC will drop the Forgotten Realms any time soon. It has been a traditional performer, and may well be a more traditional game setting than Eberron. (Greyhawk, the default world of the core rules book, is getting support via the RPGA but I doubt we will see any new Greyhawk products soon. Greyhawk references may still appear in upcoming releases because of the core rules references.)

Perhaps this is a good analogy. Think of a record label. Forgotten Realms is an established chart-topper, and Eberron is a new talent the company is promoting heavily. For the present, it is in the company's interest to promote both at the moment.
